The Invisible Cause

A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard

You have looked upon the world and believed it was the maker of your sorrow. You have stared at empty pockets and declared that money was the cause of your want. You have watched the body weaken and announced that illness had power over you. You have seen faces turn away and concluded that others held the key to your loneliness. Tonight I tell you with the quiet certainty that has never failed, the visible world is not the cause of anything you experience. It is the expression, the out-picturing, the living shadow of an unseen state of consciousness that you are now sustaining within yourself. The outer is forever the effect. Consciousness alone is the invisible cause.

Can you hear this? The circumstance you curse is not pressing upon you from without; it is being projected from within. The condition you fight is not independent; it is the faithful servant of the assumption you have accepted as true of yourself. Every detail of your days—every penny, every heartbeat, every meeting, every silence—arises solely because you are conscious of being the one who must endure it. Change the inner awareness and the outer must dissolve and reform in perfect obedience. This is the first and eternal principle. There is no other.

You are not at the mercy of people, of markets, of time, of history. You have never been. The man who feels imprisoned by debt is not imprisoned by banks or creditors; he is imprisoned by the silent conviction that he is the debtor. The woman who believes her health is slipping away is not being robbed by age or heredity; she is faithfully wearing the garment of the one who is conscious of frailty. The outer picture is innocent. It has no power of its own. It can only mirror, with absolute fidelity, the state of consciousness you have clothed yourself in. When you truly see this, a great door swings open inside you and the light of freedom floods every chamber of your being.

Look gently now at any area where you feel stuck. Do not struggle against the appearance. Simply ask yourself in the silence: What am I conscious of being that this scene must reflect? The answer will come not as a loud voice but as a quiet knowing. You will discover that you have been wearing, moment by moment, the feeling of lack, the feeling of limitation, the feeling of being opposed. That feeling is the invisible cause. It is the secret decree you have been issuing from the depth of your awareness. And because you are the awareness itself, the decree cannot return void. It must appear. Yet the moment you withdraw your consent from that inner state, the moment you cease to be conscious of being the victim, the outer picture loses its nourishment and begins to wither like a branch cut from the vine.

Consciousness is the only reality. Everything else is its shadow. The room you sit in, the clothes upon your back, the news you heard this morning—none of these created your mood. Your mood created them. You have been taught the reverse all your life, and so you have wandered in the desert of effects, forever trying to rearrange shadows while the light within remained unchanged. I declare to you now: the light is the cause. You are the light. You are the invisible cause wearing visible garments. When this realization breaks upon you, not as theory but as living fact, you will smile at the former struggle, for you will see that you were never fighting an enemy; you were simply misunderstanding your own creative power.

Let us dwell here together until the truth becomes your very breath. You do not have to make the outer change first. That is the ancient error. The outer is dead until your consciousness gives it life. Therefore the one act required is the quiet, majestic act of assuming the new state within. You do not shout at the wall to move. You simply cease to be the one who sees an immovable wall and become, in the secret of your own awareness, the one for whom the way is already open. In that instant the wall, having no life of its own, must obey the new consciousness. This is not wishful thinking. This is the law of the universe revealed in its simplest and most majestic form. Consciousness is cause; manifestation is effect. There is no exception.

Feel the relief that floods you when you stop blaming the visible. The landlord is not the cause of eviction threats. Your sustained feeling of insecurity is the cause, and the landlord is merely the actor hired by your inner drama. The doctor’s report is not the cause of fear. Your acceptance of vulnerability is the cause, and the report is the faithful echo. The empty bank account is not the cause of worry. Your identification with poverty is the cause, and the figures on the page are only the mirror reflecting what you have declared yourself to be. Release the inner assumption and watch the outer picture rearrange itself without the slightest effort on your part. It has always been this way. You are simply awakening to what has eternally been true.

Tonight, in this very moment, you can trace every condition in your life back to its invisible source. Sit quietly and let the realization deepen. Whatever you are conscious of being, that you out-picture. You have never out-pictured anything else. The glory of this truth is that it places the entire kingdom in your hands. You are not a victim navigating a hostile world. You are the world’s creator walking in a dream of your own making. And because the dream is fluid, responsive, obedient, you may awaken within it at any instant by simply changing the state you are conscious of being.

Dwell upon this until the old habit of looking outward for causes dissolves completely. You once thought the quarrel began with the other person’s words. Now you see the quarrel began with your assumption that you are one who must be opposed. You once thought success was blocked by competition. Now you know success flows the instant you become conscious of being the successful one. The visible never initiates; it only fulfills. The invisible consciousness is the sole actor, the sole author, the sole power. When this becomes your living conviction, you will move through the world with the calm authority of one who knows the secret of secrets.

Let the truth sink deeper still. Your past is not the cause of your present. The past is simply a former state of consciousness that you have already outgrown, yet you keep it alive by remaining conscious of its limitations. Release the memory in feeling and the record in the outer world must fade. Your future is not waiting somewhere ahead like a fixed script. Your future is the natural out-picturing of the state you choose to wear this night. Choose the feeling of the wish fulfilled and tomorrow will bear witness, not because tomorrow is powerful, but because your consciousness is the only power.

You may ask silently, “But how can this be when the evidence is so strong against me?” The evidence is strong only because you have given it your attention, and attention is the lifeblood of every condition. Withdraw your attention from the evidence and place it wholly upon the new state. Nourish the new feeling as faithfully as you once nourished the old. Water it with your quiet acceptance. Warm it with your gratitude. Soon the outer will begin to conform, not gradually in struggle, but suddenly in perfect correspondence, for the law knows only one speed—the speed of conviction.

This is the freedom the prophets knew. This is the freedom Jesus walked in when he looked upon the tomb and saw life instead of death. He did not wrestle with the visible corpse. He simply refused to be conscious of death and became, in the depth of his awareness, the consciousness of life. The visible had to obey. It always obeys. The same power rests in you this moment. You are not a lesser being. You are the same I AM wearing temporary garments of limitation. Remove the garments in consciousness and the outer must reflect the change.

Every morning when you open your eyes, remember: the day ahead is not coming at you; it is coming from you. The people you will meet are not independent wills; they are actors in the play of your assumption. The events that unfold are not random; they are the fruit of the tree of your inner state. Tend the root in secret and the branches will bear whatever you have decided to be. This is not philosophy for the idle. This is the practical, living science of reality that transforms the stuck life into the free life in the twinkling of an eye.

Let us go still deeper. The body you inhabit is not causing your experience of health or its opposite. The body is the servant. Your consciousness of vitality or frailty is the master. Speak to the servant through the master and the servant rearranges its atoms without argument. The money in your account is not the measure of your supply. Your consciousness of abundance or lack is the measure, and the figures on paper are merely the scorekeeper recording the game you have chosen to play. Change the inner score and the outer numbers must follow.

You who feel trapped in repeating cycles, hear this: the cycle is not external fate. The cycle is the loop of an unchanged assumption returning to itself. Break the loop in awareness and the cycle shatters. You do not have to wait for time to release you. Time itself is the servant of consciousness. Awaken tonight to the truth that you are the invisible cause, and time will bow and rearrange its hours in your favor.

Feel now the majestic simplicity of it all. You do not need a thousand techniques. You need one clear seeing: the outer is effect; consciousness is cause. Rest in that seeing. Luxuriate in it. Let every breath affirm it. When the old habit of blaming the visible arises, smile gently and return to the invisible. Each return strengthens the new state until it becomes natural, until it becomes you. And when it becomes you, the world you see will be the world you have always deserved but could not claim while you remained unconscious of your true identity.

This is the great reversal. You stop trying to change the mirror and you polish the face that looks into it. The mirror has no choice but to show the polished glory. You stop pleading with effects and you command from the cause. The effects have no choice but to obey. You stop identifying with the garment and you remember you are the wearer. The garment reshapes itself to the dignity of the one who wears it.

Tonight, before sleep claims you, perform this one sacred act. Withdraw your consent from every unwanted condition. In the quiet darkness, declare with calm authority: I am no longer conscious of being the one who must endure this. I am now conscious of being the one in whom the solution is already natural. Feel the shift. It may be subtle at first, like a soft wind moving through an open window, yet that subtle shift is the movement of the only power there is. Sleep in that new consciousness and awaken tomorrow wearing it as your natural garment.

The visible world will begin to sing a new song because you have changed the invisible singer. People will act differently not because you manipulated them but because you no longer sustain the old assumption that required their old behavior. Circumstances will rearrange not by magic but by the same law that has always operated: consciousness is cause; all else is effect.

You are the cause. You have always been the cause. The realization of this single truth dissolves every chain you ever thought was forged outside yourself. Walk now in the dignity of the one who knows. Speak, act, and feel from the center of your being as the invisible cause made visible in perfect form. The world you have longed for is not coming; it is already here the instant you claim it in consciousness.

And as you rise from this hearing, carry with you the unshakable knowledge that nothing in the outer can ever again tyrannize you, for you have seen the truth: the visible world is not the creator of your experience. It is the beautiful, obedient expression of the unseen state you choose to wear. Choose tonight, and choose forever, the state that honors the divinity within you. For you are the I AM, the invisible cause, and all things are possible to the one who knows this and lives it.

The kingdom is within. The power is within. The cause is within. And from this night forward, you walk as the one who has remembered. The outer must conform. It has no other choice. You are free. You have always been free. Now you know it, and knowing it, the whole world becomes your obedient servant, reflecting back the glory of the consciousness you dare to assume. This is the truth. This is the law. This is your eternal freedom.
