Desire – The Engine of Creation

A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard

Can man fail to realize his desire? Most decidedly he cannot—if he but knows the secret of desire itself. Yet how many walk this earth burdened by unfulfilled longing, mistaking the stirrings within them for torment rather than recognizing them as the very engine that moves all creation? They chase, they beg, they strain after shadows, never seeing that desire is not something apart from them, not a whim to be tamed or postponed, but the living Word of God moving through their own consciousness, seeking embodiment.

Tonight I speak to you plainly of this one great truth: desire is the engine of creation. It is the blessed and natural craving that rises from the depths of your being and will not rest until it takes form in your world. Desire is not something you must create. Desire creates through you. It is fashioned within you because of what you now claim yourself to be. When a man hungers, he does not reason his way toward food; the desire for it springs automatically, complete with its own plan of fulfillment. When a man is bound, the urge for freedom surges within him unbidden. So it is with every desire that moves in you. These are not accidents of the mind. These are the spoken words of God, and every word, every desire, is a promise already containing within itself the power of its own expression.

See this clearly now. The urge of itself has no reality until it is joined to consciousness. In the beginning was the Word. That Word is your desire swimming in the sea of your awareness, seeking embodiment. And the moment you unite it with your awareness of being, the second great step is taken: the Word is with God. Your awareness of being—your I AM—is the only living substance there is. Things live only as long as you are conscious of being them. Therefore, to realize desire you do not command it with loud words or repeated affirmations. You become aware of being the thing desired. In that instant two have agreed—your consciousness and the desire itself—and the agreement is established on earth.

This is the spiritual marriage. This is creation. You are the conceiver and the conception made one. Desire is the engine, and your awareness of being is the fuel that drives it. Without this union the engine idles; with it the engine moves all things into form. You are now the Father and the Son bearing witness of the Father. The conceiver remains greater than the conception, yet ever one with it. So when the desire stirs, recognize it for what it is: the invitation of your own awareness saying, Come up higher. Be what I AM now inviting you to be.

You have heard it said that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith, in its simplest and most powerful form, is nothing more than the naturalness with which you feel the desire already fulfilled. When you can drop the thing desired into consciousness like fertile seed into prepared soil—confident that it shall appear—you have done all that is expected of you. Do not worry about the how. No man knows that way. Its ways are past finding out. Speculation is proof that the seed has not yet been planted, that you still clutch it in the hand of doubt instead of releasing it into the soil of your own awareness.

Look upon your desires—all of them—as the living Word moving through you. Do not condition them with ifs or buts or somedays. Do not ask whether you are worthy. You, as man, did not create the desire; it was given. It is the gift. Your only responsibility is to receive it fully, to feel the naturalness of already being that which the desire implies. Rise in consciousness to the point where you are grateful for having received that which is not yet apparent to the senses. In that moment the gift is yours. Your awareness, which is God, is not mocked. It returns to you pressed down, shaken together, and running over with the very quality you have claimed.

Tonight, right now, test this truth within yourself. Take one clear desire that moves in you. Do not look outward and measure how far away it seems. Turn your back upon the evidence of the senses. Close your eyes to the outer scene. Feel yourself to be the man or woman who already possesses what you desire. Do not force it. Simply let the feeling of the wish fulfilled soak into you until it becomes natural—until it feels like the most ordinary, inevitable thing in the world. Rest in that feeling. Sleep in it if you can. This is the inner act that sets the engine of creation in motion. No outer effort is required. The engine knows its work.

You may say within yourself, “But I have desired before and nothing happened.” Then you have not truly united the desire with consciousness. You have let it swim about unclaimed. You have looked at the outer world and accepted its denial. You have conditioned the desire with doubt, with “if only,” with “perhaps someday.” But life makes no mistakes. It gives you exactly that which you are conscious of being. As long as you remain conscious of being unfulfilled, so long will the desire remain an unembodied word. Change your consciousness and the word becomes flesh. This is the engine at work—quietly, surely, inevitably.

Desire is the engine of creation because it never lies. It reveals your present state of consciousness even while it calls you to a higher one. When you feel the urge, recognize it as the Father within you drawing you to Himself. No man comes unto me save the Father within me draws him. That Father is your own awareness. The desire is the voice of the Father saying, Come up higher. Accept the invitation. Rise. Become it in consciousness, and the outer world will rearrange itself with effortless ease to confirm what you have done within.

Do not speculate on the manner of its appearing. The moment you begin to speculate you have slipped back into doubt and the seed is never planted. Simply know that the desire, once joined to your awareness, must embody itself. It has no choice. Consciousness is the only reality, and things but mirror that which you are conscious of being. Therefore become conscious of being the fulfillment of your desire, and the mirror must reflect it. You are at this very moment drawing into your world that which you are now conscious of being. Now you can see why the engine never fails when the union is made.

Desire is not something apart from you. Desire is you—God in action, the eternal urge toward greater and greater expression. It is the engine that drives all creation, and you are its master the instant you know yourself to be the awareness in which it moves. Claim it tonight. Live from it tonight. Feel the naturalness of the wish fulfilled until it sings in your blood. Then go about your outer day in peace, knowing that the engine of creation is already at work.

And it is working now. The moment you accepted the desire as the living Word and felt yourself to be its fulfillment, the agreement was made. Two have touched—your consciousness and the desire—and heaven and earth have kissed. The outer world must now move in obedience to the inner revelation. You will see it. You will touch it. You will live it.

Let this truth sink deeper still. Desire is the mainspring of the mental machinery. It is the blessed hunger that stirs within you and will not be denied. When you feel after it—when you claim it as yours now—the signs follow. They never precede. Get the consciousness first, and the thing is compelled to appear. Your desires contain within themselves the plan of self-expression. They are the Word of God speaking through you. They are blessed, they are right, they are natural. Do not fight them. Do not postpone them. Do not doubt them. Receive them. Unite them with the awareness that you are the I AM. Feel the naturalness of the wish fulfilled until it becomes your very identity.

You may wonder why so many desires seem to remain unfulfilled in the world. The answer is simple and merciless in its clarity. Men have not united the desire with consciousness. They have left the engine idling. They have looked upon the outer world as the cause and accepted its verdict instead of rising in consciousness to the level of the desire. But the engine does not fail. It only waits for the union. The moment that union is made, the engine turns and all things are compelled to conform.

Rest in this knowing. Desire is not a torment to be endured. It is the engine of your world. It is the living Word moving through you, seeking to become what you already are in the secret depth of yourself. When you feel after it with the quiet certainty of one who knows, the outer world must obey. For your awareness of being is the Lord of all, and desire is the engine through which that Lord expresses Himself.

Tonight, as you leave this place, take with you this one great truth and let it live in you. Your desires are the engines of your world. They are the Word of God speaking through you. They are blessed, they are right, they are natural. Receive them fully. Unite them with your awareness of being. Feel the naturalness of the wish fulfilled until it becomes your very identity. Then go about your way in peace, for the engine of creation is already at work, and nothing can stay its hand.

You are the operant power. Desire is the engine. Consciousness is the fuel. Fulfillment is the destination. And the journey is already complete the moment you say, in the silence of your own being, “I AM that which I desire to be.”

Rest in this knowing. It is done. The engine has been started. The Word has been made flesh. And your world is already moving into the perfect expression of the desire you have claimed tonight.

This is the great secret. This is the engine of creation. And it is yours—now and forever.
